Question
How do you write a budget when you have never managed one?

When a funder asks a volunteer-run project for a budget for the first time, what level of detail do they want? Every item, or categories?

If the funder allows a contingency line, use it. Costs move, and a budget with no room for that turns into a series of awkward emails.

Categories, with a note under each. Personnel, equipment, travel, and a small line for administration. Do not list every small item. Do say how you got to each number. If the funder gives its own template, use that one.

Include the time of the people doing the work, even where it is unpaid today. A budget that treats labour as free tells the funder the project stops the day somebody takes a job.

Replying to @thabo_m
I had not thought of counting unpaid time. Thank you.
