Has anyone published from a masters dissertation? How did you start?

A dissertation can be publishable and still be a long way from a paper, and supervisors do not always have time to help. For somebody who has never submitted to a journal, where does the process start?

Pick the journal before you rewrite anything. Its word limit and structure decide what you cut. Writing first and choosing later means doing the work twice.

And read a few recent papers from that journal. You are matching a house style as much as a subject.

Be careful with journals that email asking for submissions and then ask for a publication fee. Some open access journals with fees are sound and some are not. DOAJ, the Directory of Open Access Journals, lists open access journals that meet its criteria, so check there before you pay anything.
