Question

How do you keep participant data safe with almost no budget?

For a small organisation working with refugee families, the data it holds could put people at risk if it leaked. With no IT staff and no budget for a system, what can be done?

Start by collecting less. Many forms ask for things nobody uses. What you do not hold cannot leak, and that costs nothing.

Agreed. After that: full disk encryption on every device, a password manager for the team, and no names in file names. Each of those can be done with free tools.

Collecting less had not occurred to me as a security measure. That changes how I think about the forms.
