Some competitions charge an entry fee, especially in arts and film, and many do not. Check who runs it and what the fee pays for before you send any money.
Read the judging criteria and structure your entry against them in that order. Judges score against a sheet, and making them hunt for the point costs you marks.
Read the eligibility twice before you write anything. An application that does not meet it is turned down however strong it is, and nobody tells you that was the reason.
