Write down who you want to meet before you go. A conference is conversations with talks around them, and planning that part is time well spent.

A visa can take longer than the time between acceptance and the event. Start as soon as you are accepted, and ask the organisers for an invitation letter straight away.

Start the documents before the essay. References, transcripts and proof of status are the things that take weeks and are outside your control. The writing is the part you can do in a hurry; the paperwork is not.
