Siting a borehole: the survey, or the place people ask for?

brian_otienoContributor··1 view
A tension that comes up in rural water projects: the hydrogeological survey recommends one place and community leaders ask for another. Drilling where it is politically easier can mean water at a depth that makes the pump costly to maintain for as long as it runs. Project updates mostly list what went well. It would be useful to hear how others handle this conversation.

The same tension comes up with where to place shared storage. Useful to see it put this way.

The community politics side is real, and it is not something training covers. How do people raise it without setting the survey against the leaders?

One approach is to show the yearly maintenance cost of each site instead of arguing about the survey. A cost per year is something everybody in the room can weigh.
