Siting a borehole: the survey, or the place people ask for?

A tension that comes up in rural water projects: the hydrogeological survey recommends one place and community leaders ask for another. Drilling where it is politically easier can mean water at a depth that makes the pump costly to...

aisha_dialloQuestionAgricultureWhat do you do when farmers do not want the improved seed?An improved seed variety can do better in trials and still be taken up by only a small share of farmers. When that happens, what question has the programme...
brian_otieno20 days agoAsk what farmers do with the harvest. If the improved variety does not store well, or the market pays less for it, a better yield does not help them, and refusing it is a sensible decision.View reply
aisha_dialloQuestionWaterWho maintains the pump after the project ends?Handover plans often say the community will maintain the pump, and pumps still break and stay broken. What is missing from the plan?
brian_otieno21 days agoOften it is money, not willingness. A committee with no fund cannot buy a part. One arrangement is a small regular payment from each household, collected before anything breaks.1 found this usefulView reply

brian_otieno22 days agoOne approach is to show the yearly maintenance cost of each site instead of arguing about the survey. A cost per year is something everybody in the room can weigh.1 found this usefulView reply
arjun_thapaQuestionCommunityHow do you keep volunteers past the first three months? Many groups get plenty of sign-ups after an event and find few people still there a few months later. What keeps volunteers?
brian_otieno23 days agoAsk why they came. Somebody volunteering to learn a skill needs different things from somebody volunteering out of duty, and it is easy to treat both the same.2 found this usefulView reply
arjun_thapaQuestionClimateEarly warning systems: does anyone act on the warning?A flood can be forecast days ahead and people still leave on the day, when it is dangerous. Why does a warning not lead to action?
brian_otieno24 days agoPeople move when somebody they trust tells them to, not when a system does. Who delivers the warning can matter more than how early it comes.4 found this usefulView reply
